A Hispanic Heritage Event

In 1994 friends and family of Rojelio Cuellar, Jr. gathered in September to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a backyard bbq. For the next several years the annual backyard bbq and celebration grew larger with more friends and invites. In 1998 Rojelio joined up John Farias to plan the first organized Hispanic Heritage Festival. With the help of the Alice South Texas Museum the event was held downtown and was the first gathering with live music and food vendors. Soon after, a small group of people became interested in the event and the Alice Hispanic Heritage Committee was officially organized. The committee's sole purpose is to plan and put on the the Alice Hispanic Heritage Festival Fiesta del Centro. The membership is over thirty-five members with many volunteers that help during the event. The committee's community donation is to youth scholarships for continuing education and to the local Meals on Wheels Program

The Fiesta del Centro is now celebrated downtown in September on Friday and Saturday after Labor Day. The two day event includes live music, exhibits, food vendors, arts and crafts and an IBCA sanctioned bbq cook-off. This year the event will be held Friday & Saturday 9 & 10, 2011. For information email rojeliojr@yahoo.com or call the Alice Chamber of Commerce at 361-664-3454 or 361-701-6865.
